Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the immune system, leaving the body vulnerable to other infections and diseases. HIV is transmitted through certain body fluids, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk. HIV is not transmitted through casual contact such as shaking hands, hugging, or sharing food.

There are several main ways in which HIV can be transmitted:

  • Sexual Contact – HIV can be transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person, whether it be through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. HIV can be transmitted even if the infected person does not have any symptoms. Condoms and other barrier methods can help reduce the risk of transmission.
  • Sharing Needles – HIV can be transmitted through the sharing of needles, syringes, or other drug-injection equipment. This is because these items can come into contact with an infected person’s blood and then be used by someone else, potentially transmitting the virus.
  • From Mother to Child – HIV can be transmitted from a mother to her child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. HIV-positive mothers can take medications during pregnancy to reduce the risk of transmission to their babies.
  • Blood Transfusions – HIV can be transmitted through blood transfusions, although the risk is extremely low in countries where blood is screened for HIV.

It is important to practice safe behaviors to prevent the transmission of HIV. This includes using condoms during sexual activity, not sharing needles, and avoiding exposure to the blood of others. If you are pregnant and HIV-positive, it is important to speak with your healthcare provider about ways to reduce the risk of transmission to your child. Early diagnosis and treatment of HIV can also help prevent transmission to others.
